Hair loss treatment: pros and cons

Going bald early on is something that happens to many men and is also something that many men dread happening to them. Whilst women tend to manage to hang on to their hair until they are relatively old many men start to lose their hair early on in life, such as their twenties, thirties and forties. Having to deal with hair loss and bald patches leaves many men feeling extremely self conscious and can really hit their confidence levels. However, men can take action to try and rectify premature hair loss and baldness with the use of a very effective treatment called Propecia.

Clinical trials have shown that Propecia can be very effective for men who are experiencing balding and hair loss. This treatment works in two ways, both of which can benefit men hugely. First off, it helps to stop further hair loss in its tracks. However, it is also able to revive dead hair follicles in order to get them producing hair again, which means that you could see regrowth in areas where you thought baldness was now a foregone conclusion.

Of course, as is the case with any treatment or medication that you take, it is important that you weight up the pros and cons of Propecia, as this will help you to determine its suitability and will give you an idea of what to expect with this treatment.

Pros

This is a treatment that is extremely simple and easy to take, as it comes in the form of a small and discreet pill. This is great for men, considering the alternative could have been some nasty, odd smelling solution that had to be applied to the scalp. Topical products for the scalp can sometimes do more harm than good, as they can cause intense itching and soreness, which could even result in greater hair loss. However, with the Propecia tablet you can take your medication discreetly and quickly without anyone having to know. It also makes it easier to continue treatment whilst you are away, as the last thing you want to do whilst on vacation or a business trip is start applying solutions to the scalp!

This medication can help in two ways. Propecia can help to reduce the risk of further hair loss, which means that your hair loss may be stopped in its tracks. However, it can also deal with damage that has already been done by addressing inactive hair follicles in bald areas and getting them to produce hair again

Whilst Propecia has been proven to be effective for many men there is no guarantee that it will work for all men. Some men may experience no hair regrowth put could see the level of hair loss reduced, other men may see no benefits, whilst some may see both hair regrowth and a reduction in hair loss.

There are a number of side effects that can come with taking Propecia, although most men have not experienced side effects with the medication. Possible side effect include loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, possible allergic reactions, breast enlargement and tenderness.

Uninsured motorist cover

No matter where you live, there’s an increasing chance the next driver who crashes into you will be uninsured. The national average is about 20% of drivers uninsured. In California, the celebrate because it’s only 15%, i.e. a one in seven chance you will be in an accident with no insurance company to begin covering your losses. This means you either buy your own cover or you must be prepared to pay all your own losses out of your own pocket. This is not to say you can never recover losses from an insured driver. The courts exist. There are laws to enforce payment of damages. But since the usual reason for being uninsured is a lack of money, there’s no point in spending your money on court fees and a fancy attorney if the driver at fault has no cash and does not earn a good pay check to garnish. That’s just adding insult to the existing injury. So the Californians have been carrying out a little research to see exactly how much we have to pay to buy uninsured motorist cover.

The team put together a profile of a single male driver, aged 30. He had no tickets and lived in a modest ZIP code area. They picked a 2010 Toyota Corolla as his vehicle and showed him willing to accept a $500 deductible. All UM policies come with banded cover for personal injuries with the first number being the maximum payable to the first person injured and the second being the total maximum for all medical expenses no matter how many injured. The profile was sent out to all insurers licensed to sell policies in California. The range of the quotes was quite wide with the lowest being $28 for adding 15/30 to the existing cover while the most expensive was $106. If the model driver opted for 25/50, the lowest quote was $60 and the most expensive $148.

California is an interesting state to study because it has a law requiring insurers to quote for UM cover. The lawmakers believe you should always know the cost of rejecting the additional cover. In most other states, you have to ask for a quote. The Californian driver has to opt out of buying the cover. So, given the odds of being hit by an uninsured motorist, is it worth paying a maximum of $148 or $12 per month? Given the cost of hospital treatment it may look a good premium rate to avoid taking the hit on your savings or maxing out your credit card(s). But all this does raise the question why states like California continue refusing to fund effective enforcement of the mandate.

There’s no doubt we would all find our auto insurance quotes falling if all 47 states with a mandate enforced the law. Yet every time the question of funding the centralization of record-keeping comes up, the agencies ask for millions to make their computer systems compatible. When police cannot routinely check whether a driver has valid insurance, you know the system is broken. So until politicians get a little backbone and force uninsured motorists off the road, our auto insurance quotes will continue arriving on the high side.

Nevada is the place to be poor

It would be a wonderful world for everyone if we could all get past this cult of selfishness. As an aside, we can note with ironic detachment that the first film in the planned trilogy of Atlas Shrugged is struggling to cover its costs. Indeed, so poor is the box office, we may never see the second and third parts made. It seems the Tea Party and Libertarians resist the idea of paying for admission to see their favorite story on the big screen. Ah well, such are the priorities of the Right when asked to pay for anything. Which brings us to the progress of Assembly Bill 299 in Nevada. If you ask the Republicans, this is the worst piece of redistribution since Karl Marx first thought up the idea of communism. First, let’s consider the problem.

When you drive around our great nation, there’s a one in five chance the driver of the vehicle crashing into yours is uninsured. This woeful state of affairs persists despite there being a mandate requiring all drivers to carry a minimum of liability cover. The practical reality is a lack of enthusiasm to enforce the laws. Since most uninsured drivers feel they stand a good chance of avoiding prosecution, they save the money and leave the rest with the risk. Yes, that’s right. Unless you paid for collision cover and, possible uninsured/underinsured cover, you pay for all losses arising from the crash out of your own pocket. So you have what the Brits call Hobson’s Choice. You either pay more in premiums or you pick up the bill for all losses. Either way you pay more. If the law on mandates was actively enforced, we would all pay less – assuming, of course, the insurance companies would pass on their savings to us. But if you ask politicians to fund active enforcement on budgets in deficit, they back away (usually on foot), claiming it’s more important to use the little money available to keep schools open and pay someone to keep the streets clear of rubbish.

So Assembly Bill 299 has been passed by the Senate Commerce, Labor and Energy Committee. This will add 50c to everyone’s insurance policy to create a fund. If any citizen of Nevada is really poor and produces an income tax return to prove it, they can claim a subsidy to buy a new low minimum liability policy. The theory is this will encourage the virtuous poor to use what little money they have to buy insurance. Needless to say, the Republicans oppose this, advising all the poor to abandon their vehicles and take a bus if they have somewhere to go. Obviously none of the Republican lawmakers have ever tried to use the public transport system.

What makes all this interesting is the evidence offered by State Farm which estimates the average policyholder would find their auto insurance quotes reduced by $50 per year. So let’s be straight about this. The Republicans want to defeat a bill making you pay 50c and force the poor on to buses. By doing so, they want to deny every driver in Nevada a potential reduction of $50 per year on their auto insurance quotes.

What’s an annuity?

Not so long ago, there was a group action by several Insurance Commissioners against the Nationwide Life for its failure to create an effective regime for the supervision of agents selling annuities. The action was settled for $2 million so it wasn’t considered a major problem, but it does give us the chance to talk about annuities and what can go wrong. The traditional policy for your life accumulates value over the years and, when the moment comes, there’s a payout of a lump sum to your family and dependents. But, if you want, you can either buy an annuity or convert your life policy to an annuity. This starts in the same way. You pay regular installments and build up value. Then, when the due date arrives or you exercise the option, the policy starts to pay out a regular income. It’s one of the ways in which you can save for your retirement and the monthly amounts add to your other pension amounts and keeps your head above water.

To protect you from exploitation, only insurance companies are allowed to sell annuities and each state’s Insurance Commissioner has the responsibility of looking out for your interests. Should a Commission discover the insurer is giving you a short measure, it can step in and order changes. In bad cases, the insurer can be faced with a heavy fine. The reason for this supervision is that the premium payments are tax deductible and it’s the responsibility of the states to ensure you get the best possible value for your money. The Commissioner also ensures you are not using the annuity policy for some avoidance purpose that would be unlawful.

You should approach these policy with some degree of care. Although there are tax savings, the investment returns are often not impressive. Most people benefit from a consult with an independent financial advisor. An experienced advisor will know which companies front-load their policies with big fees and management commissions. You should also have someone do the math to check the minimum guaranteed returns are reasonable.

During the first phase of the policy, you pay into the insurer. All benefits are delayed until the fixed date or you trigger the option after a minimum number of years has passed. At this point, the insurer starts paying the monthly amount either to you or to the person you nominated. Now comes the interesting part. Are the payments to continue for a fixed period of time or during the remaining years of your life? Further, will there still be benefits payable when you finally give up on life? Never buy a policy unless you understand exactly what the insurer is offering and how much each option costs.

Life insurance policies can be quite complicated documents both in their language and the way they calculate the benefits. Independent advice is essential. If you decide to go-it-alone and later find the insurer missold the policy, complain to the Insurance Commissioner. Assuming the Commissioner agrees with you, you usually find you are fully compensated for all your losses. This is not advising you to be passive when someone sells you a financial product. The Commissioner is not going to be sympathetic if you bought a life insurance product without making a reasonable attempt to understand it.

The risk of heart disease

Here’s a scene you’ve seen played out hundreds of times in everyday life. You’re watching TV, surfing the net, doing some reading, and you come across something lecturing you about heart disease – just like this article. So you immediately find your eyes glaze over. Your interest drops to zero and you find better things to think about. After all, everyone knows someone who’s had a heart attack. A couple of days later, they’re out and about, boasting about the number of stents holding their arteries open. Heart attacks are no big deal, right? But suppose we put it the other way round. Suppose we tell you that men with heart disease have a serious risk of erectile dysfunction? Hey, you mean something’s threatening your enjoyment of sex? Now that’s a lot more interesting, right?

So what exactly are we talking about? Its helpful to start with a few numbers.. In men under the age of 60, the rate of erectile dysfunction is about 12% of the adult male population. But this rises up to 42% of men as they add years over 60. In one sense, this is a perfectly natural part of the aging process as the level of testosterone falls in the bloodstream. In giving these simple percentages, we should not forget the body grows more likely to breakdown in other ways. We could list high blood pressure, diabetes, atherosclerosis, etc. If you are also overweight, still smoke, eat an unhealthy diet and largely sit around without exercising, you’re in the zone for serious health consequences. Even the Chinese are growing alarmed. A major new piece of research from Soochow University has confirmed the global trend in China. That aging men who show signs of erectile dysfunction at a relatively young age are lining up for cardiovascular disease, strokes, heart attacks and general death. Now while we might not care very much about a few more Chinese dying, this study involving 36,740 participants sends out a general warning to men everywhere. Lead an unhealthy life, find yourself affected by erectile dysfunction, and this will seriously increase the risk of “all-cause mortality” – a fancy way of saying death.

So if you’re affected by erectile dysfunction as a younger man, the message to you should be clear. You could use this site to buy some little blue pills at a very good price and, in the short term, this would almost certainly solve the problem. But if you change nothing else about your lifestyle, you are papering over the warning cracks. You should make an urgent appointment with your primary care physician for the standard tests for heart disease. Come away with a clean bill of health and the little blue pills from the online pharmacy will be waiting for you. But if the diagnosis shows high levels of carbohydrates in your blood, your vessels are slowly blocking. Your blood pressure will be rising and a heart attack threatens. This is easy to avoid with drugs and a few simple lifestyle changes. So, which is it to be? A long and healthy life, or a few more months of sexual activity thanks to Viagra? Remember, if your arteries are blocking up, Viagra will not work once the blockage passes 70%!

Climate Change Already Hitting American Homeowners

The vast majority of the world accepts that climate change is happening, though some conservatives in America doubt whether it is man-made or not. Here’s another question: what does global warming mean for your homeowners insurance?

The natural forces tied to climate are significant risks to homes and big factors in determining insurance premiums. Changes in those risks mean changes to premiums and policies.

How Climate Is Changing

Scientists at American universities, in the UK, in South America, and even the United Nations agree that climate change is already happening. Glaciers are melting and this is evidence, but there’s more. Record floods and droughts in Sri Lanka, Brazil, and China, as well as deadly heat waves in the United States and across Europe, are all consistent with the projections from climatologists.

It’s not just that the planet is getting hotter – it’s that it is getting hotter in some places, cooler in others, and currents and weather patterns are changing. Desert could become rainforest, prairies swamps, and tundra could be eradicated altogether.

What Insurers See

Insurance companies look at climate change and they see chaos. The statistics they have used for a long long time are quickly becoming irrelevant. They won’t be quite certain how to determine how at risk a given home is to disaster.

Floods

As flooding has gotten worse already, many home insurance companies have responded by making flood insurance non-standard for insurance policies. It has been largely separated from water damage coverage.

Many people who need flood coverage do not have it because they do not live in an area traditionally susceptible to floods. With climate change, however, tradition is out the window. We are seeing higher levels of precipitation in many areas of the United States. There has already been record flooding in Pennsylvania and in Texas.

Check with a climate authority to be sure you are safe. If you aren’t, get flood coverage on your home insurance.

Wildfires

Some places have seen record lows in precipitation, which has caused drought. While drought is a threat to all animal life, it gets worse when it leads to wildfires, as we have seen in Texas and California recently. If your climate becomes more arid, it could easily mean an increase in premiums.

Hurricanes

Climate scientists have predicted that hurricanes will become more common and worse. It is as yet unproven that the recent hurricanes are caused by climate change, but it is definitely true that they were made worse by some of the effects of climate change.

Tropical storms do not normally go so far inland as Irene did. The reason Irene made it so far and did so much damage was her ability to pick up so much moisture along the way. A hurricane or tropical storm gets moisture from the surface water of the oceans and gulf. In this case, surface temperatures were abnormally high due to global warming, which meant that a larger amount of moisture could be taken in, fueling Irene on her path of destruction.

People in the inland United States may have to get hurricane coverage on home insurance soon. People in coastal states susceptible to hurricanes may also see higher hurricane deductibles and hurricane coverage premiums.

What about the other sexual problems?

One of the fascinating things we can do as human beings is put information in little boxes and pretend that’s all there is to know. It’s like when you’re at High School and, for the next test, all you need to know is [insert information]. Once you pass on to the next level, you can often forget whatever you learnt for all those tests. The lid has closed on the box and, unless there’s a crisis, you need never try to remember it again. Well, it’s like the world decided it wanted a smaller box for all the information on sexual problems. In the bad old days, we used to talk about impotence and that included quite a lot of different stuff. Now we only seem to talk about erectile dysfunction and there’s not much to say about that. All the other stuff about an inability to have an orgasm or to ejaculate, low levels of sperm or infertility has disappeared. It’s like we’re not supposed to think about anything like that now we have the erectile dysfunction dugs.

Yet, if you ask the doctors who specialize in this area, they’ll tell you that about two-thirds of the men with severe erectile dysfunction also find it difficult to reach an orgasm, and about 60% find it difficult to ejaculate. To understand what’s happening, we have to understand how drugs are marketed. When a pharmaceutical manufacturer comes to market with something new, it’s vitally important to establish a connection between the brand name and the specific condition it treats. To make this drug stand out, the other diseases and disorders in the same part of the body have to be minimized. The important problem has been solved. The marketers prefer you not to ask about the others.

So, because of this manipulation of the general discussion about sexual problems, the only one we focus on is erectile dysfunction and we do that because we have an effective treatment. Where does that leave us with all the men who cannot ejaculate or no longer have an orgasm? Well, when we do go to the doctor, we fail to report these other problems, and the doctors fail to ask us because there’s no treatment currently available. Yes, sadly, the erectile dysfunction drugs only treat the named condition. They have no effect on the other problems.

When you go back to the original statistics, two-thirds of men with severe erectile dysfunction have no remedy for the secondary problems. They could therefore find hard erections return, but they are still not able to have full sexual intercourse. For older men, children are no longer on the agenda, so their inability to produce children will be less important. Nevertheless, the failure of the pharmaceutical industry to find treatments for these other problems is disconcerting.

The message to take away from this article is to be realistic. If your only problem is the ability to produce a hard erection, Viagra is the best and most reliable drug on the market. In the majority of cases, it will give you back what was lost. But don’t expect Viagra to solve any other problems. It does nothing for fertility, nor does it treat the missing orgasm or the ability to ejaculate.

Neuropathic pain can be relieved

There is a massive body of scientific research on the nature of pain. And it’s well established that pain is one of the most common symptom for a countless range of medical conditions. Now there’s a lot of information on how the pain is caused, the mechanism behind it as well as the implication of this unpleasant symptom. Yet, with all the knowledge doctors have these days it still isn’t easier for people to deal with pain and it still remains to be a challenging experience. Depending on the severity of the condition or injury there may be different pain relief option put in use for effective relief. Yet, when it comes to neuropathic pain there’s a whole different approach that needs to be applied for any benefits to be achieved.

Neuropathic pain is a type of pain that is still to be fully studied that’s why it’s hard to diagnose and treat it. Its most common cause is the actual damage to the nervous system that usually carries the nerve signals of pain from the affected area to the brain. The damage can be different in various cases and sometimes it can be a routine dysfunction of the system itself. As a result the nervous tissue may be triggering false pain signals all over the body that are interpreted by the brain as actual signs of injury in particular areas. And it’s really hard to find the segment of the nervous system that is actually dysfunctional and causing these sensations. That’s why it is very hard to diagnose and treat neuropathic pain conditions because it’s also hard to predict the outcome of treatment in each particular case. But it’s also dangerous to leave this type of pain untreated because it can seriously affect many aspects of a person’s life leading to such psychological complications as sleep disorders, depression and fatigue.

Another difficulty in dealing with neuropathic pain is the low effectiveness of typical painkiller medications. Some of them may be effective but it usually takes a lot of time identifying the actual effective dosage, which can take weeks and months to establish. And a lot of people tend to get discouraged by the lack of results with such treatment.

Although, surprising one of the most painkiller medications in the US, Ultram, was observed to be actually effective against this type of pain. Its mechanism of action that actually blocks pain interpreting receptors in the brain makes it really effective in case of nervous system dysfunctions that cause neuropathic pain. Yet, this medication should be used with attention because it can interact with other medication that are applied in neurological conditions such as antidepressants, muscle relaxants and anti-convulsion medications. That’s why it is very important to discuss all of your treatment options with your doctor and inform him about all the medications you’re currently taking. The effectiveness of your treatment can depend on the choices you make and the drugs you use. So if you want to use Ultram for relieving neuropathic pain conditions make sure that it’s safe for you to take the medication in the first place.

Make driving safer

As a result of steady government pressure, the physical safety of the vehicles on our roads has been rising steadily. When crash and rollover test results name and shame manufacturers, they act to protect their brand image. They have invested in new designs to reinforce the shell to protect the driver and passengers. Now add in the crumple zones where parts of the body collapse and absorb the impact. Finally, you make the car more easily controlled with better suspension and braking systems. All these innovations have seen the number of deaths and serious injuries falling steadily over the last ten years. But there’s little to be pleased about when more than 32,000 people die in crashes every year. The number of people merely injured is frightening. In some age groups, more people die on the roads than through disease. When driving becomes a leading cause of death, something should be done.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently issued a policy document suggesting how changes in the law might improve safety. Proposals to change the law, particularly to use the criminal law, to force people to act in particular ways is always controversial. There’s a strong libertarian culture that objects when freedom of action is limited. Their knee-jerk response is to argue many of these laws make victimless crimes or where the only people injured are the ones labeled criminals. So let’s take the first proposal to force every state to make safety belt laws primary and to make enforcement high-profile. The libertarians might say they should get to chose whether to wear safety belts. It’s their bodies at risk so their decision. The statistics say that states with effective enforcement consistently have lower fatalities. It’s the same with making motorcycle helmets mandatory. The statistics show hundreds of lives a year would be saved if laws were put in place and enforced.

Now let’s talk about increasing the age at which teens can be licensed to drive. States where the age of licensing is 17 show up to a 30% drop in the number of accidents and a real drop in the number of deaths. Now how about reducing the speed limits? Again the evidence is absolutely clear. Speed kills. It also increases the amount of pollution and burns more oil at a time we should be aiming to use less. Curiously, some states have recently been removing red light cameras as infringing the privacy of drivers, yet they also significantly reduce the accident rates. In 2009, almost 700 people were killed running red lights. Research also shows accidents fall where you replace stop lights with roundabouts. Finally, we need active policing to take the drunk and incapacitated drivers off the roads.

If all the states took this action, the total number of accidents would fall, fewer people would be injured and a lot less would die. If the volume of claims falls, the next round of auto insurance quotes also falls. Fewer payouts in smaller amounts need less premium income. So get on the phone to your local lawmakers. Tell them auto insurance rates are the next big political issue and, if they don’t pass some new laws, they will be voted out at the next election.

4 Risks that Probably Aren’t Covered

Even if you read your policy very careful, you might still be surprised these 10 things are not covered.

#1: Currency

Some people think keeping money under their mattress is safer than keeping it in a bank. At least money in banks are insured! If you have cash lying around, under the mattress, or even in a safe or lock box, it will probably not be reimbursed under the terms of your homeowners or renters insurance.

#2: Water Damage from Backups and Floods

Unless you have flood insurance, nowadays insurance companies won’t cover water damage caused by flooding or storms.

What most policies do cover burst pipes and damage from accidents or non-flood disasters.
Don’t expect sewage backups or other pipe backups to be covered standard though. What you need is “sewer backup coverage”.

#3: Trampolines

Depending on your state, you might not get coverage for your trampoline. Obviously, no trampoline repairs, but the bigger concern is your liability from injuries incurred during trampoline use. Over 100 thousand injuries happen each year due to trampolines.

In some places and with some companies, you might be disqualified from getting any property liability coverage at all if you put in a trampoline. And don’t think about not telling your insurer, because they can void your whole contract if they learn about it.

You should also be concerned about the damage to your home or others that a trampoline can cause if it is blown away in a storm. At the very least, bolt it down.

#4: Much Ado about Pools

While screened pool enclosures are great for making sure you can use your pool whenever, free from bugs and other things that might drift in, they are also super expensive, vulnerable, and usually uninsured. This is especially true in coastal states in the South, where enclosures and tropical storms are both common. Enclosures are extremely vulnerable to hurricanes and high winds, when objects flying through the air can crash into them and cause thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Don’t even bother with the claim, because they are not going to pay it.

Don’t have a fence or “cage” around your pool? Make sure you check your state law, because many states require them. Many insurers do as well, if you want them to cover liability. If a person should drown in your pool, as thousands of children do each year, you could be charged with criminal neglect; most home insurance providers will not help you without a fence.

Water slides and diving boards are really joys for children, but absolute nightmares for home insurance providers. That’s why many home insurance companies will not provide liability coverage for pools with either, and some won’t even offer you a policy at all if you have a slide or board.

#5: Pit Bulls and Other “Aggressive Breeds”

In no way is it scientifically proven that certain breeds of dog are more dangerous than others, but that won’t stop insurance companies from denying you liability coverage. Because of statistics, certain breeds might not be offered coverage.

Dogs categorized as high-risk breeds include:

Pit bulls
Akitas
Chow chows
German shepherds
Wolf hybrids
Doberman pinschers
Presas
